World Yoga Day 2015: International Yoga Day 21st June 2015

June 21 was declared as the International Day of Yoga by the United Nations General Assembly on December 11, 2014. Yoga, a physical, mental and spiritual practice having its origin over 6000 years ago in India, aims to integrate the body and the mind.
The declaration of this day came after the call for the adoption of 21 June as International Day of Yoga by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his address to UN General Assembly on September 27, 2014 wherein he stated:

Earth Hour 2015 Observed across the world

To show their growing concern over climate change, people all over the globe observed the 9th edition of Earth Hour on March 28, 2015 by switching off their lights. All the electrical appliances were put off for one hour in order to increase awareness.

Rajasthan govt. opens mother’s milk bank

Rajasthan’s first state-run human milk bank, “Jeevan Dhara”, was inaugurated by Health Minister Rajendra Rathore at the Mahila Chikitsalaya in Jaipur on March 26, 2015.
“Jeevan Dhara” has been started in collaboration with the Norwegian government and JK Lon Hospital and aims to collect excess breast milk from lactating mothers and provide it to infants deprived of it.

India 5th biggest generator of e-waste in 2014

India is the fifth biggest produce of e-waste in the world, discarding 1.7 million tons of electronic and electrical equipment in 2014, a UN report, released on April 19, 2015. Said warning that the volume of global e-waste is likely to rise sharply by 21% in next three years.
The ‘Global E-Waste Monitor 2014’ complied by UN think tank United Nations University, said at 32% the US and China produced the most e-waste overall in 2014.

Sahitya Academy Award

Padma Awards 2015

President Pranab Mukherjee has announced the name of recipients of this year’s Padma awards. He approved conferment of 104 Padma Awards. Padma Awards, the country’s highest civilian awards, are conferred in three categories viz. Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri.
This year’s list comprises 9 Padma Vibhushan, 20 Padma Bhushan and 75 Padma Shri Ahri Awardees.

Miss World 2014: South Africa's Rolene Strauss

Miss South Africa, 22-year-old Rolene Strauss won Miss World 2014 pageant on 14^th December, 2014. Strauss is the first Miss World titleholder from South Africa in 40 years and the first to win the competition in more than 55 years.

The ceremony also featured a tribute to Indian actress Aishwarya Rai, Miss World 1994.

Miss Universe is an annual international beauty pageant that is run by the Miss Universe Organization. The Indian American writer Jhumpa Lahiri has won Asia’s richest literary prize for her novel The Lowland, which pivots around the Naxalite uprisings of the 1960s.
